If you are inveterate fisherman and you are in the environs of Helsinki, it is really an answer to your prayer. Go fishing to the river Kirava, where you can angle a pike, a perch, a small fry, and an ide or to its rapids, where you can find a trout, an iridescent trout, a bull trout, and a grayling.
If you are in luck and you know how to put all fish under a spell, you can try your hand at competitions of fishers. You must measure, weigh on the scales, calling somebody to witness, photograph and send a photo of your fished competitive specimen with the special completed form (which can be found in the Internet) to organizers of the competition.
The most well-known competition is the national competition of Suomi, which has already got the status of international. The winner is one who can angle the biggest fish. For participation in competition the minimum weight of the fished pike should be not less than 10 kg!
Other large competition is Puruveden Lohikuninkuus. It is held in summer, right after St. John’s Day. Those, who practice troll fishing from a boat, take part in it. In 2004, the main prize was a car. Another competition takes place in winter, at the end of February – beginning of March, in Tuuri and is called Miljoona Pilkki. Professionals of ice fishing compete in it. Sports winter fishing is similar to chess, and there is an uncountable number of tactics of catching, as well as situations in which these tactics are used. You should have a skill of moving flags from hole to hole (by the way, the designation of occupied holes by flags has come to amateur fishing from fishing sports). Remember, that it is necessary to estimate geometry of location of holes relative to your rivals and edges of the bordered zone of fishing.
However, your trophy should be big enough for participation in any competition. If the catch fished out from the river is not big enough not only for competition, but also to be a typical adult, it should be freed out in a reservoir. The size of a fish, which you can take away, depends on a type of fish and a way of catching. The others (but only if those fish are still alive) must be freed out in lake or river, let them put on weight.
And one little ruse from the Finnish fishers: going on fishing to Finland, do not be superfluously self-assured, even if you have had tons of the fished trophies and kilograms of peeled scales under your belt. The nature (including the fish) loves respectful and attentive treatment of it, especially from fishermen. Go and treat it with respect then it will also be nice to you. The fish will be biting well.
