Yangtze River (it is usually called Changjiang River in China, while Yangtze River was traditionally called before 1949, it was named after an old ferry called Yangtze Jin. The Yangtze River originally just meant the section of lower reaches of the river, while because it was heard initially and misunderstood partially by Western missionaries, Yangtze River became the international name) is Asia’s longest and the third longest river in the world with the total length of 6,397 kilometers.

Originated from the Tibetan Plateau in western China, Yangtze passes through the highlands in Yunnan and Sichuan Provinces, hilly gaps in Chongqing and Hubei, and then Hunan and Jiangxi, the eastern China plain areas of Anhui, Jiangsu, Shanghai, and eventually flows into the East China Sea. The whole valley area of Yangtze River is up to more than 1,800,000 square kilometers. Some people regard it as a dividing line between northern and southern China, although geographers generally consider the Qinling Mountain-Huaihe River line to be the official line of geographical division.

The scenery of Yangtze River in the area from Chongqing to Yichang in central China is marvelously arduous but magnificent. This area called the Three Gorges area such as Qutang, Wu and Xiling Gorges. The stunning view of the Three Gorges Dam, the world largest water conservancy project hitherto, located in San Dou Ping of the midsection of Xiling Gorge in the Yangtze River valley, is one of the highly recommended tourist attractions. Majority of China’s freshwater lakes are dotted along the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River. Some large and famous lakes include Poyang, Dongting, Taihu and Chaohu Lakes.

Shanghai, located at the river estuary, is the largest city in China as the industrial and business center. The cities of Hangzhou, Suzhou, Changzhou, Wuxi, Zhenjiang and Yangzhou are in the Yangtze River Delta, where China’s most dynamic economic area. Hangzhou and Suzhou are being regarded as the heavens on earth since they have very beautiful scenery and long cultural history.
